Wesleyan softball suffers two league sweeps over weekend

Greensboro, NC - The Battling Bishop softball team of North Carolina Wesleyan suffered two USA South sweeps over the weekend, dropping a pair of games at Ferrum on Saturday before falling to Greensboro on Sunday. The Bishops are now 7-21 on the season, 2-12 in conference play.

On Saturday at Ferrum, the Panthers earned two 8-0 wins over the Bishops, both in five innings. In the opener, NCWC was limited to six hits and was led by a 2-for-3 performance by junior Kate Braun.

Despite tallying just seven hits in the contest, Ferrum managed four runs in each of the first and fifth innings thanks to four Bishop fielding errors. Freshman Brooke Davis suffered the loss, allowing eight runs (three earned) over four complete.

The second game saw a similar scenario unfold as the Bishops were limited to five hits. Freshman Meredith Mills was 3-for-3 to pace Wesleyan at the plate.

The Panthers managed eight runs (seven earned) on 10 hits off of NCWC starter Ashley Driver (3-9), who took the loss in the circle after going 4.1 innings.

It didn't take long for the Bishops to break their scoreless drought as Wesleyan took a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first on Sunday at Greensboro. Senior Whitney Moshier did the honors with an RBI-single to right that plated Carla Pridgen.

Unfortunately, the Pride managed three runs over the first two innings and took a 3-1 lead into the top of the fourth. The Bishops tied the game with pair of scores, but GC answered with four unanswered runs over their final two at-bats for the 7-3 final.

Davis (4-10) went the distance in the losing effort, allowing seven runs (six earned) on 10 hits, while Moshier finished 2-for-3 at the plate.

In the weekend's final game, Greensboro completed the sweep with a 4-0 win. Junior Tiffany McCord (0-1) took the loss, going 4.1 innings and giving up four runs (three earned) on 10 hits. The Pride limited NCWC to just three hits in the game.

Wesleyan continues USA South play on Wednesday when Methodist University visits Edge Field. Game one is slated to begin at 2:30 p.m., and the Bishops will be honoring Senior Day prior to the first pitch.
