Battling Bishops sweep Mary Baldwin, drop two to Methodist

Staunton, VA - Senior Whitney Moshier (pictured) went
4-for-7 with six runs scored and three RBI to help lead her Battling Bishop softball squad to a two-game sweep of Mary Baldwin College on Thursday afternoon. After taking game one in six innings by a 10-1 score, the Bishops needed four runs in the top of the seventh of game two to force extra innings, where they stole the 14-9 victory. The sweep came on the heels of two losses to Methodist University on Wednesday afternoon in Rocky Mount. Wesleyan is now 9-23 on the season and finishes USA South play at 4-14.

On Thursday at MBC, the first game saw the Bishops jump on top 3-0 in the first thanks to a three-run blast by freshman Meredith Mills.

The Squirrels managed their lone run in the second on a Hamilton homer, but it was answered by another NCWC three-spot in the third as Mills, Payton Gordon, and Dani Abbey each drove in a run. The Bishops went on plate four runs over the course of the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to take a nine-run advantage and force the eight-run rule before reaching the seventh.

Freshman hurler Brooke Davis (5-11) picked up the win, going six complete and allowing one run while striking out six and walking one.

In the second game, MBC took a 9-5 lead into the seventh inning. The Bishops rallied in their final at-bat as Gordon led off the frame with a single to left. An error and fielder's choice was followed by four consecutive singles by Braun, Mills, Tiffany McCord, and Jessica Poindexter. The result was extra innings as NCWC tied the score at 9-9.

The eighth inning saw Wesleyan plate five runs, highlighted by a two-run double by Moshier. McCord (1-1) earned the win in the relief, allowing just one hit and no runs over the final three innings.

Previously against Methodist on Wednesday, the Monarchs swept the Bishops on Senior Day by 7-6 and 5-0 scores. Sophomore Carla Pridgen was 3-for-4 with three RBI in the opener, while McCord had two hits in the nightcap. Davis and Ashley Driver each suffered a loss in the circle.

Wesleyan will wrap up its regular season schedule on Tuesday afternoon at Chowan University. The non-conference twinbill is slated for 3:00 p.m. start in Murfreesboro.
