Insley breaks record in Bishops' 3-0
sweep of Methodist
Fayetteville, NC
- Behind a game-high 24 kills by
Brittany Insley, the Battling Bishop
volleyball squad managed a 3-0 sweep
of Methodist University on Tuesday
night in Fayetteville. Game
scores were 30-27, 30-23, and 30-16.
Insley (pictured) made history in
the process as she set a new
program-record for kills in a
season. The talented sophomore
now has 481 on the year. The
previous mark of 458 was set by
Laura Hilbert in 1998.
Entering Tuesday night's match,
Insley needed just one kill to tie
and two kills to break Hilbert's
record, which she quickly recorded
in game one. Her first tied
the game at 9-9, while the
record-breaker came at 11-10.
Both were assisted by senior Caitlin
George.
This marks the second straight
season that the Bishops have broken
key records against the Monarchs.
Last year, it was George who did the
honors by setting a new career
record for assists.
More importantly, however, the
Bishops earned the win in convincing
fashion. After a slow start in
game one, Wesleyan cruised to
victories in games two and three to
avenge an earlier loss to MU.
Wesleyan recorded a .264 hitting
percentage on the night compared to
the Monarchs .104.
In
addition to Insley's performance,
Sydney Bens chipped in 13 kills,
while the George sisters each
tallied 15 digs. Caitlin also
dished out 45 assists on the night.
Wesleyan is now 19-12 overall and
10-6 in USA South play going into
Friday's final two regular season
conference matches at Averett
University. The Bishops will
face the host Cougars at 1:30 p.m.,
followed by a key match-up with the
Panthers at 3:30 p.m. NCWC and
Ferrum are currently tied for fourth
place in the league standings.
