Bishop runners finish 9th at Salem to open cross country slate

Winston-Salem, NC - The North Carolina Wesleyan cross country squad opened up its season on Saturday morning, finishing ninth among 12 Division I, II, and III teams competing in the 2009 Salem College Invitational.  Carole Ateba led the Bishops by turning in a team-best time of 28:13, finishing 43rd among 82 total runners in the 5K race.  As a team, Wesleyan finished just 19 points behind USA South foe Greensboro College, while the Bishops beat out Livingstone, Bluefield State (WV), and Bluefield.

In addition to Ateba's performance, freshman Jennifer Oster notched a time of 28:47 (48th). Also competing for the Bishops were Bristy Parker (29:48/54th), Juliana Richardson (30:25/57th), and Amanda Frimpong (34:53/70th). 

Converse College took top honors with 39 team points and five top-15 finishes. Tyrah Winfrey of Winston-Salem State earned medalist honors with a meet-best time of 21:57.

The Battling Bishops return to action on Friday at the Reebok Wolfpack Invitational in Raleigh. The race is slated for a 4:00 p.m. start.
