Trump leads Lady Bishop lacrosse to first USA South win

- In USA South lacrosse action, the Lady Bishops of
North Carolina Wesleyan picked up their first-ever
conference win, downing Ferrum College by a 13-5
score at Scalf Field. Freshman goalie Cary Trump
(pictured) recorded ten saves and earned her second
win in goal for Bishops, who are now 2-7 overall,
1-2 in USA South play. The Panthers now stand
at 2-5 on the season and remain winless in league
play at 0-4.
Wesleyan jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first seven
minutes of the game. Buffy Casto started the
scoring with an unassisted goal at the 28:46 mark.
Haley Griffiths and Sarah Smith followed with their
first goals of the contest on two assists from Allie
Stylc.
Ferrum battled back to score three of the next four
goals on two goals by Stephanie Perih and one by
Kerry Toomey. The Bishops took the 4-3 lead
into the break.
Perih scored the first goal of the second half to
knot the score at 4-4, but the Lady Bishops exploded
to score nine of the game's final ten goals to put
the game out of reach. Smith scored what
proved to be the eventual game-winner with 18:39
remaining.
Casto led all scorers with five goals and an assist,
while Smith and Griffiths each tallied three goals apiece. Stylc chipped in with one goal and three assists,
while Lauren Stearns connected on her first goal of
the season. Mikey Case added an assist.
For
the Panthers, Perih finished with four goals, while
goalie Jana Rodriguez tallied eight saves.
The
Lady Bishops continue USA South play at Methodist
College on Tuesday. Game time is slated for
4:00 p.m.
