Bishop women drop two games in weekend Classic

Rocky Mount, NC - The Battling Bishop women's soccer team dropped two tight contests in this weekend's NCWC Fall Classic, falling to USA South foe Meredith on Saturday and to non-conference opponent Salem on Sunday.  Both losses were by a 2-1 score.  Wesleyan is now 1-4-0 on the season, 0-1-0 in league play.

In Saturday's action, Meredith scored two goals in the first 12 minutes to take an early 2-0 lead.  The first goal came just 1:24 into the contest, while the second came on a Maggie Hart penalty kick ten minutes later.

The Angels took the 2-0 lead into the break, but the Bishops managed to cut the lead in half at the 65:18 mark with a goal by Meredith Hester.  Reva McCloud was credited with the assist.  Unfortunately, Wesleyan failed to notch the equalizer as Meredith out-shot Weslayn 23-3 on the day.

NCWC keeper Bryanne Godfrey gave up both goals and tallied two saves before being relieved by sophomore Sarah Hess.  Hess made six saves in 64 minutes of play.

For the Angels (3-2-0), Sarah Chadwick made one save en route to the victory.

On Sunday, Salem's Elizabeth Schneider scored goals in the 23rd and 61st minutes to give the Spirits a 2-0 lead.  Hester again answered for the Bishops by booting home a deep pass from Rachel Rosenbarker at the 63:26 mark.

The Bishop offense created several opportunities down the stretch, but Spirit keeper Andrea Baldwin held Wesleyan in check with five saves.

Salem out-shot Wesleyan 14-11 on the day, while the Bishops tallied 13 corner kicks to the Spirits five.  Hess suffered her first loss but made an impressive eight saves.

In the two other games, Salem downed Louisburg 2-1 in overtime on Saturday, while Meredith defeated the Hurricanes 6-0 on Sunday.

Wesleyan returns to USA South action next Saturday when the BIshops host Greensboro College.  Game time is slated for 2:00 p.m. at Scalf Field.
