goals secures weekend split for Bishop women
Raleigh,
NC -
Freshman Lydia Hunt tallied a pair of goals on Saturday
afternoon, leading her North Carolina Wesleyan women's
soccer team to a
3-0 victory over Peace College in Raleigh. Hunt (pictured)
netted the eventual gamewinner at the 38:37 mark and later
notched her second score in 88th minute. Unfortunately, the
Battling Bishops dropped a 5-1 contest at Meredith on Sunday
en route to the weekend split.
Hunt's goals against
Peace sandwiched a score by Kellie Simons in the 62nd
minute. Senior Meredith Hester was credited with an
assist on the play. As
a team, NCWC held an 18-14 lead in shots and a 6-3 advantage
in corners.
Defensively,
freshman keeper Tiina Rastiola recorded her first collegiate
shutout, finishing with seven saves in the match.
Against Meredith on
Sunday, Wesleyan struck first with a goal by Hanna-Leena
Kokkonen at the 10:31 mark on Hester's second helper of the
weekend. The Angels, however, knotted the score just
25 seconds later on a score by Kristy Knight. Alex Calvert's
header off the corner gave Meredith a 2-1 lead at
intermission.
Knight scored MC's
first goal of the second half before Calvert proceeded to
complete a hat trick with two more scores. The Angels
out-shot the Bishops 20-2 in the match with Rastiola
tallying four saves.
Wesleyan (4-10, 2-4
USAC) takes a break from USA South action on Wednesday when
they travel to the University of Mary Washington for a 4:00
