Meredith wins
2009 Women's Soccer Fall Classic, Bishops split
Rocky
Mount, NC -
The Avenging Angels of Meredith College went 2-0 at this
weekend's NCWC Women's Soccer Fall Classic, taking home top
honors with 4-0 and 4-3 wins over Bluefield College and
Bridgewater College, respectively. Wesleyan and Bridgewater
each went 1-1 in the tourney as the Eagles downed NCWC 6-0
on Friday and the Bishops defeated Bluefield 4-3 on
Saturday. The Battling Bishops' 4-3 victory over the Rams
was their first of the season thanks to a pair of goals by
senior midfielder Meredith Hester (pictured). The Eagles, however,
grabbed the runner-up finish with their head-to-head win
over Wesleyan.
Bridgewater opened the Classic with a 6-0 win over Wesleyan
on Friday afternoon. The Eagles raced out to a 5-0 lead at
intermission and out-shot the Bishops 18-9 on the day.
Krista Ready tallied two goals for BC, while Jacey Kelley
recorded two assists.
Meredith then downed Bluefield in the nightcap by a 4-0
score as Carrie Talbert netted the eventual gamewinner in
the 43rd minute. Emmy Errante notched a goal and an assist
in the contest.
On
Saturday, the Bishops (1-3-0) took a 2-0 lead into the break over
the Rams on first-half goals by Hester and freshman Kellie
Simons. Simons made it a 3-0 advantage in the 60th minute on
a successful penalty kick. Bluefield (1-5-0) got a goal by Katie
Warren at the 61:44 mark, but Hester netted what would prove
to be the eventual gamewinner just seconds later on an
unassisted 20-yard shot. The Rams' Kristyn Large recorded a
pair of goals down the stretch for the 4-3 final. NCWC
keepers Katri Snellman and Tiina Rastiola combined for six
saves on the day.
In the
tournament finale, Bridgewater (4-1-1) took a 3-1 lead over
Meredith (4-0-1) into the final ten minutes of play. The
Angels put together a late rally with two goals by Alex
Calvert in the 83rd minute, one off a penalty kick after a
BC handball in the box. The game looked to be headed for
overtime until the Angels' Hannah Garrison netted the gamewinner with less than four minutes remaining. Maggie
Hart was credited with an assist on the play.
Wesleyan returns to action next Saturday when the Bishops
host Sweet Briar College. Game time is slated for 2:00 p.m.
at Scalf Field.
