Bonorden's last second goal sends NCWC to weekend split

Danville, VA - Senior Aubrey Bornorden (pictured) scored her first goal of the season with eight seconds left in regulation to lift her Battling Bishop women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Ferrum College in Friday's USA South Conference opener. Unfortunately, Wesleyan saw its three-game winning streak snapped on Sunday with a 3-2 loss to Averett University. The Bishops are now 3-4-0 on the season, 1-1-0 in league action.

Against Ferrum on Friday, the Panthers took a 1-0 lead into the break thanks to a Kara Pegram score with just under ten minutes remaining in the first half.  Wesleyan tied the score in the first minute of the second period when senior Meredith Hester booted home a pass from freshman Kellie Simons.

With neither team able to score over the next 44 minutes, the stage was set for Bonorden's heroics. Simons took a shot with ten ticks left on the clock that was saved by Ferrum keeper Katie Hodkinson, and Bonorden was there to clean up the deflection for a 2-1 victory.  The last second win marks the second straight year that the Bishops have knocked off the Panthers in the final minute of play.

NCWC freshman goalie Tiina Rastiola made eight saves on 22 shots to earn the victory.

On Sunday, it was the Bishops who took a 1-0 lead into intermission on a Simons goal with 21 seconds left in the opening period.  AU's Hillary Wood knotted the score at 1-1 with a goal in the 49th minute, but Hester answered for Wesleyan just 31 seconds later for a 2-1 NCWC advantage.

Averett, however, tallied scores in the 62nd and 68th minutes to steal the come-from-behind victory.  The gamewinner was credited to Wood off a Claire Armstrong assist.

The Cougars held a 24-15 advantage in shots as Rastiola made five saves on the day. AU keeper Samantha Lupo made nine saves to preserve the victory.

Wesleyan returns to action on Wednesday against non-conference foe Guilford College. Game time is slated for 7:00 p.m. in Greensboro.
