Bridgewater completes lower seed sweep with 4-2 win

Rocky Mount, NC - Fourth-seeded Bridgewater College completed a day one sweep by the three lower seeds at the NCAA Division III Baseball South Regional, downing third-seeded Rowan by a 4-2 score.

Rowan (27-14) scratched the game’s first run in the bottom of the opening frame.  Frank Galeota led off the inning with a double and later scored on a two-out single up the middle by Bruce Reibis.

The Eagles (32-12-1) bounced back to tie the game in the top of the fourth.  Like Galeota, Bridgewater’s Jono Brooks led off the frame with a double.  Brooks advanced to third on a single by pitcher Rick Read and scored when the Profs’ Tim Edmeads failed to play the ball cleanly.

Bridgewater broke the 1-1 tie with a run in the sixth when Brooks doubled and scored on a balk by Rowan hurler Ryan Kulik.  The Eagles pushed across an insurance run in the seventh to go up 3-1 on a two-out single to center by Matt Steele that plated Bryan Saunders.

The Profs pulled to within one on a sac-fly RBI by Jim Comprelli in the eighth, but BC catcher Grant French countered with a blast to left field in the ninth to secure the 4-2 final.

Hurler Rick Read (10-1) picked up his tenth win in a complete game gem.  He gave up only two runs on five hits, while walking one and striking out ten.

Kulik (6-3) took the loss after allowing four runs on eight hits in nine innings of work.  His effort was hampered by five fielding errors committed by the Prof defense.
