NC Wesleyan to remains undefeated with 7-5 win over Bridgewater

Rocky Mount, NC - It took two days to complete, but the Battling Bishops of North Carolina Wesleyan finished the second round of the NCAA Division III Baseball South Regional as the tournament’s only remaining undefeated team with a 7-5 win over Bridgewater College.  The game, which was suspended on Thursday due to lightning in the area, was picked up on Friday morning with one out in the bottom of the ninth.

On Thursday, Bridgewater took a quick 2-0 lead in the first behind a towering two-run homerun by left fielder Justin Showalter.  Bishop hurler Kyle Robertson had retired the first two batters before issuing a crucial walk to BC’s Rick Read that kept the inning alive.

The Eagles would scratch another run in the third to go up 3-0, but NC Wesleyan answered with a two-spot in the bottom half of the frame thanks to two-out RBI-singles by Rob Johnson and Matt Smith.  Luke Williford started the rally with a double to right-center.

Matt Steele countered for the Eagles with a clutch two-out single to center that plated Mike Graves to give BC a 4-2 advantage.  The Bishops, however, again answered in the bottom of the frame, scoring three runs on four hits and a wild pitch.  Nathan West and Chris Pecora each delivered RBI-doubles to give the Bishops a 5-4 lead after four complete.

West struck again in the sixth, connecting on an RBI-single to plate Kenny Flythe.  He later came around to score on a passed ball and groundout.

Robertson (7-2) made the 7-4 lead stand up, allowing five runs on twelve hits in 8.1 innings of work.  Cale Strickland came on in relief on Friday morning with the tying runners on first and second.  He struck out Read and forced Showalter to ground out, earning the save and ending Eagle threat.

Jimmy Greene (5-2) took the loss for the Eagles after giving up seven runs on ten hits in 5.1 innings.

Johnson, Smith, and West each had two hits to pace the Bishops, while Showalter finished 3-for-4 at the plate for Bridgewater.
