Rowan eliminates Salisbury 9-5 to advance

Rocky Mount, NC - The Profs of Rowan University fought off elimination for the second straight day, downing top-seeded Salisbury by a 9-5 score on Friday at the Division III Baseball South Regional.

The Profs, who exploded for 17 runs on Thursday, picked up where they left off by plating five runs in the first inning.  Bruce Reibis delivered the big blow, a two-RBI single that opened up the scoring for Rowan.

Salisbury managed to scratch a run in the first on an RBI-groundout by Jason Lively that scored Greg Lemon, who had tripled to lead off the inning.  The Gulls added another run on a groundout in the third, but the Profs got it back the following inning on a Matt Enuco RBI-single to left to keep a four-run lead at 6-2.

The Gulls put up a two-spot in the bottom of the fourth and pulled to within one in the sixth on Lively’s second RBI of the day.  Salisbury had a chance to tie the contest that same inning, but Rowan centerfielder Jim Comprelli offered up some game-saving heroics.

With Gull runners at first and second with two outs, SU’s Alex Vitale singled sharply up the middle.  Nick Pegalow rounded third and scored easily, but the run was waved off when Comprelli gunned down Lively at third before Pegalow crossed the plate, securing the 6-5 lead.

The Profs added three insurance runs in the ninth for the 9-5 final, highlighted by a Matt Enuco solo shot to left-center.

Kevin O’Hara (3-1) p[earned the win and Gary Winkler the save in relief for RU.  O’Hara allowed one run on five hits in 2.1 innings of work.  Winkler tossed a scoreless 3.2 innings to finish out the game.  SU starter Bryan Brainer (5-2) took the loss after lasting just two-thirds of an inning.
