Bishops earn championship ticket with 9-5 win over Virginia Wesleyan

Rocky Mount, NC - Behind a tournament-high 19 hits, the host Battling Bishops of North Carolina Wesleyan earned a ticket to the championship game of Division III Baseball South Regional with their ninth straight win.  NCWC eliminated rival Virginia Wesleyan by a 9-5 score and will take on third-seeded Rowan University at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday for the chance to go to the Division III World Series. Rowan will have to knock off the Bishops twice.

NC Wesleyan (30-16) jumped out on top in the opening frame when six of the first seven batters collected hits.  The Bishops scored four runs in the inning, but the lead was cut in half in the bottom of the inning as the Marlins plated two runs of their own.

VWC (24-22) pulled to within one at 4-3 with another run in the second.  Phil Cadle led off the inning with a walk and came around to score on a Mike Cardwell RBI-single.  Of the Marlins’ first three runs, two reached by bases-on-balls and the other by an error.

The Bishops opened up their lead with a run in the fourth and another four-spot in the fifth.  Kenny Flythe and Justin Batts led off the inning with back-to-back doubles followed by back-to-back singles by Nathan West and Luke Williford.  After Chris Pecora singled for the Bishops’ fifth straight hit, Rob Johnson hit into a bases-loaded fielder’s choice that saw a costly Marlin fielding error at home allow two more runs to cross.

Up 9-3, NCWC freshman hurler Ben Moore (5-4) settled in on the mound and gave up only one run over his final five innings.  He scattered eight hits and allowed four runs, two earned, in seven complete.

Marlin starter Zach Baker (5-5) took the loss after giving up seven runs on fourteen hits in four innings of work.

Pecora finished 4-for-4 at the plate, while Ryan Snyder and Batts each had three hits for the Bishops.  Dan Sellers and Ricky Allred paced Virginia Wesleyan with three hits apiece.
