Bishop baseball ranked
#7 in ABCA national poll
Rocky Mount, NC
- The North Carolina Wesleyan baseball program is
pleased to announce that the Battling Bishops have been
tabbed #7 in the latest American Baseball Coaches
Association’s poll. The Bishops, who made
their 12th World Series appearance in 2006, finished the
year with a 31-19 overall record and a #8 national
ranking. Additionally, Wesleyan enjoyed a USA South
Conference Tournament and South Regional Championship
last season and have been picked to win the 2006 league
title.
Head Coach Charlie Long
returns seven position starters and four starting
pitchers, including All-American and USA South Pitcher
of the Year Blake Rice. Other returning players include
first team All-Conference performer Matt Smith, second
team selections Chris Pecora, Nathan West, and Kyle
Robertson, and honorable mention selections Ted Williams
and Luke Williford. Rookie Pitcher of the Year Ben Moore
also returns for his sophomore season.
Says Long, "2007 could be a good year for NC Wesleyan
baseball if the group is able to bring a more consistent
style of play day in and day out. The players and
coaches must stay focused and continue to
strive for above-average performance. Consistent
pitching and solid team defense will be the key to any
success that the team may enjoy.”
This newest poll has two differences:
It was done closer to the start of the season, and it
was voted on by the same committee that produces the
regular-season poll, which will begin in mid- to
late-March. To view the entire ABCA preseason poll, click

The Bishops open up the 2007 season on Friday, February
9th at Bauer Field when they host Eastern Mennonite at
2:30 p.m.
