Bishops win third and fourth straight, down PC and HSC

Rocky Mount, NC - North Carolina Wesleyan's baseball team recorded its third and fourth straight victories on Tuesday afternoon, downing Piedmont and Hampden-Sydney by 6-3 and 5-2 scores, respectively, at Bauer Field. Sophomore Justin Rahm (pictured) had a productive day at the plate, going a combined 4-for-7 with a walk and two RBI, while hurlers Max Knowles and Jonathan Shearon picked up wins on the mound. NCWC has now won six of its last eight contests to move to 8-10 on the season.

In the first game versus Piedmont (9-7), the Battling Bishops completed a two-game sweep of the Lions with a 6-3 victory thanks in part to a four-run fifth inning.

Knowles moved to 3-0 on the season by going six complete and allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits. He also struck out six on the day. Junior John Child picked up his second save of the season, tossing 2.1 scoreless innings to close out the game.

Luke Williford and Rahm paced Wesleyan’s offense with 3-for-4 showings at the plate. Rahm and fellow sophomore Zach Alexander also drove in two runs apiece. PC starter Dusty Black took the loss and allowed all six Bishop runs, although only three were earned.

Against Hampden-Sydney (7-5), the Bishops jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first as Williford and senior Zollie Woodlief each drove in runs. HSC tied the game with a pair of runs in the third, but a three-run fifth by Wesleyan proved to be the difference in the game. Joel Creef, Justin Batts, and Woodlief all tallied an RBI in the frame.

Shearon (1-3) went eight innings and allowed two runs on on five hits, while sophomore Andrew Webb turned in a scoreless ninth to secure his first save of the season. Mike Blanchard suffered the loss for the Tigers, giving up all five runs on six hits over five innings of work.

Wesleyan returns to action on Wednesday and Thursday when the Bishops host a two-game set with Stevenson University at Bauer Field. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m. on both days.
