Wesleyan baseball drops twinbill to 9th-ranked Salisbury

Rocky Mount, NC - The 9th-ranked Sea Gulls of Salisbury University scored 25 runs over two games to earn a twinbill sweep of North Carolina Wesleyan on Sunday afternoon at Bauer Field. The Gulls took a 13-3 decision in game one before earning a 12-5 victory in game two. The Bishops are now 2-2 on the young season, while Salisbury moves to 3-0.

In the opener, the Gulls raced out to a 10-1 lead after five innings. Most of the damage was done during a five-run fifth that saw Mike Celenza blast a three-run homer to right field. Both teams recorded a pair of runs in the sixth before an SU run in the seventh completed the 13-3 final.

Celenza was 3-for-3 at the plate for the Gulls, who ripped 15 hits as a team. Senior Zollie Woodlief turned in a 2-for-3 performance for the Bishops and drove in all three NCWC runs.

SU's Dustin Herbert earned the win on the mound, going five complete and allowing just one run on three hits. Sophomore Justin Diener suffered the loss for the Bishops, giving up five runs (four earned) on seven hits over 3.1 innings of work.

In the second game, the Gulls put up three-spots in the first and third innings before an Andy Miller grand slam in the sixth opened up a 10-2 advantage. NCWC's Joel Creef delivered a three-run triple in the bottom of frame to cut the lead in half, but SU answered with two more in the seventh to secure the 12-5 final.

Kyle Judson earned the win after tossing five innings and allowing two runs on five hits. Senior Jonathan Shearon took the loss for Wesleyan, going five innings and allowing six runs (three earned) on four hits.

Miller was 4-of-5 at the plate for the Gulls, while Creef finished with two hits for the Bishops. NCWC sophomore Justin Rahm also had two hits, including a solo shot in the second inning, his first of the season.

The Bishops return to action next weekend in Greensboro at the USA South/ODAC Spring Challenge. Wesleyan will take on Bridgewater and Randolph-Macon on Saturday before wrapping up the tourney with a contest at Guilford on Sunday.
