Ginn and Townsend highlight USA South postseason awards

Fayetteville, NC - The USA South Athletic Conference has announced its All-Conference awards for football with a total of 87 student-athletes earning recognition.  North Carolina Wesleyan is pleased to announce that head coach Jack Ginn earned Coach of the Year accolades, while senior quarterback Cedric Townsend was tabbed the Offensive Player of the Year.  The two were among 19 Blue & Gold representatives that helped the 2007 Bishops set program records for total wins (8), conference wins (7), consecutive wins (8), and conference finish (1st).

Jack Ginn picked up the first Coach of the Year award of his Wesleyan career.  Ginn led the Bishops to an 8-2 overall record and a 7-0 mark in the USA South, which earned NCWC its first USA South Championship and first trip to the NCAA Tournament. The Blue & Gold also became the first team in USA South football history to go undefeated in league play and own the championship outright.

A native of Kenansville, NC, Cedric Townsend was named Offensive Player of the Year for the second straight season.  He was second in the USA South in passing, completing 138-of-251 passes for 1,980 yards with a league-best 20 touchdowns. He also gained 675 yards rushing on 142 carries with 13 touchdowns. Townsend was second in the league in passing yards per game (198.0) and third in passing efficiency rating (137.18).  For his efforts, Townsend was named USA South Offensive Player of the Week twice during the season en route to First Team All-Conference honors.

Other Wesleyan First-Teamers on offense included senior linemen Brandon Craig and Kyle Kuhn, as well as sophomore wide receiver Orlando Webb and senior tight end Steven Burant.  Webb led the Bishops with 662 receiving yards and seven touchdowns, while Burant finished a close second with 528 receiving yards and three TDs.

On defense, sophomore LeeRon Boykin and junior Quinderra Spellman earned First Team accolades, along with senoir linebacker Judd Hyde and senior defensive back Jezreel Davis.  Boykin tallied a team-high 14.5 tackles-for-loss and four sacks, while Spellman added two sacks of his own.  Hyde was fourth on the team with 41.0 total tackles, and Davis hauled in a program-record four interceptions.

Second Team offensive selections for Wesleyan included senior lineman Nathan Hackney, running backs Bryan Haywood and Teron Bush, and senior kicker Brian Vaughn.  A junior, Haywood led the team with 769 net yards on the ground and eight scores.  Bush, last year's USA South Rookie of the Year, tallied 726 rushing yards and five touchdowns, while collecting a team-high 34 receptions.  The second leading scorer on the team behind Townsend, Vaughn converted 8-of-9 field goal attempts and 48-of-51 point-afters for 72 points on the season.

Other Second Teamers on defense included senior linebacker Bo Brown and sophomore defensive back Quentin Pope.  Brown led the squad with 70 tackles, while Pope intercepted three passes and recovered two fumbles.  Each was named USA South Defensive Player of the Week on one occasion during the season.

Rounding out Bishop honorees on the Honorable Mention squad were senior defensive lineman Kevin Burant and senior linebacker Justin Augustin.  Burant recorded 33 tackles, including 1.5 sacks this season.  Augustin led the team with three forced fumbles and was second on the team with 48.5 total tackles.

Finally, senior Donnel Cherry was Wesleyan's representative on the USA South inaugural All-Sportsmanship team.

Elsewhere around the conference, Methodist's Daryl Lawrence was named the Defensive Player of the Year, while Ferrum's Mike Vann and CNU's Adrin Diggs garnered Offensive and Defensive Rookie of the Year honors, respectively.
