Blue & Gold make football history with undefeated league slate

Greensboro, NC - The football team of North Carolina Wesleyan College made history on Saturday night.  With a 55-14 win over Greensboro College at Jamieson Stadium, the Blue & Gold became the first team in USA South history to go undefeated.  It also secured the first out-right champion in league history.   Sophomore Teron Bush (pictured) led the way with three touchdowns, two rushing and one receiving.  Wesleyan dominated GC in all facets of the game as the Bishops amassed 584 total yards and 28 first downs.  The Pride managed only 132 total yards and 14 first downs.

Teron Bush opened the scoring for Wesleyan with a 51-yard touchdown run early in the first quarter. After a NCWC 36-yard field goal by senior Brian Vaughn, Bush scored again from two yards out to give Wesleyan a 17-0 lead.

GC drove into Wesleyan territory several times in the first half but turned the ball over three times. The Pride’s Darnell Walker did manage to get Greensboro on the board with a 6-yard run, but Bush scored again on a 37-yard pass from quarterback Cedric Townsend to put Wesleyan up 38-7 at halftime.

The Bishops added two quick touchdowns to open the third quarter.  The first came on a seven-yard run by senior Derek Robinson and the second on an eight-yard run by back-up quarterback Josh Dunigan, effectively putting the the game out of reach.

Pride senior Steven Losiewicz scored the game’s final touchdown on a 1-yard run.

Wesleyan’s Townsend finished 10-of -18 for 157 yards and two touchdowns. Bryan Haywood led the Bishop rushing attack with 143 yards on 10 carries.  Defensively, Donnel Cherry tallied five tackles, while Demetrious Whitehead and Judd Hyde each had an interception.

Tim Bagamary caught eight passes for GC for 62 yards. Linebacker Brick Crowder was in on 11 tackles.

Wesleyan finishes the regular season on an eight-game winning streak for an 8-2 overall record.  The Blue & Gold’s 11-game winning streak in conference play will now carry over into next season.

Having secured the young program’s first NCAA playoff berth, NCWC will now await seeding for next weekend’s opening round.  An announcement will be made late Sunday afternoon with game time and opponent.
