Townsend’s three
touchdown passes and
two rushing scores,
the North Carolina
Wesleyan football
team managed a 49-7
victory over Averett
University on
Saturday in
Danville, VA.
Townsend (pictured)
accounted for over
300 total yards with
266 through the air
and 52 on the
ground. The win is
the Blue & Gold’s
fourth straight and
gives NCWC a 4-2
record on the
season. Wesleyan
remains undefeated
in USA South play at
3-0 and has now won
seven straight
league contests
dating back to last
season.
Averett’s early
defensive effort was
impressive as they
held the explosive
Bishop offense
scoreless in the
first quarter.
Wesleyan, however,
managed to find its
niche after the
first 15 minutes.
The Blue & Gold
scored three times
in the second
quarter with
Townsend throwing
all three of his
touchdown strikes in
the quarter. He
connected with
Laqwan Brodie from
11 yards out with
13:28 to play in the
half and later found
Bryan Haywood for a
35-yard touchdown
with 2:26 to play.
The Bishops ended
the half by
capitalizing on a
late AU (0-6, 0-3
USA South) turnover
with 13 seconds
left. Townsend
found Brodie for a
28-yard touchdown
pass for a 21-0
halftime score.
Wesleyan added two
touchdowns in both
the third and fourth
quarters, Townsend
scored a rushing
touchdown in each
period, while
Haywood added a
23-yard scoring run
in the third.
Freshman tailback
Antonio Harris broke
free from 32 yards
out for the final
score of the game.
Averett scored their
only touchdown of
the game with 13:31
remaining in the
contest on a 28-yard
interception return
for a touchdown by
William Bonilla.
Haywood led all
rushers with 127
yards, while Teron
Bush added 94 yards
for the Bishops.
Townsend completed
17-of-25 passes for
266 yards with three
interceptions.
Defensively for NCWC,
Davelle Whitney had
five tackles and an
interception.
Jeremy Dixon led the
Averett rushers with
45 yards on 15
carries. Griffin
McConaghy made 13
stops on the
afternoon, while
Jason Hill added 10,
including 1.5
tackles for loss.
Randy Bianchi and
John Garcia joined
Bonilla with one
interception each.
The Blue & Gold
return home next
weekend to host
Shenandoah
University. Game
time is slated for
1:00 p.m. at the
Rocky Mount Athletic
Complex.
