Battling Bishop golfers finish sixth at VWC Marlin Invitational

Virginia Beach, VA - The Battling Bishop golf team opened up its 2008 spring golf slate last Saturday and Sunday, March 1st and 2nd, at Virginia Wesleyan's Marlin Invitational. The two-day event was held at the par-72 Virginia Beach National golf course. North Carolina Wesleyan, under first-year head coach Mark Cole, turned in a 6th-place finish among the 11-team field. The Bishops recorded team rounds of 337 and 328 in windy conditions.

Freshman Ryan Stugis paced Wesleyan's individual efforts with rounds of 79 and 80. Stugis was one of only four players to record a sub-80 round in the first round. Christopher Crews (84-81), Dylan Bedy (87-83), and John Tappan (87-84) rounded out the Bishops' scorers.

First place team honors went to Christopher Newport with rounds of 316 and 303. The Captains' Kyle Schaffner, who shot a first round 81, took medalist honors by shooting a 70 on Sunday to finish with a two-day total of 151.
