Captains avenge earlier loss to Battling Bishops, 106-100

Newport News, VA - The men’s basketball team of Christopher Newport University avenged an early season loss to North Carolina Wesleyan with a 106-100 win over the Bishops on Tuesday night at the Freeman Center.  The Captains, who led by 18 with 7:38 remaining, survived a furious Wesleyan rally down the stretch that saw the Bishops pull to within four with less than a minute left.  With the loss, Wesleyan falls to 9-12 overall and 2-6 in the USA South. Christopher Newport improves to 7-14 overall and 3-5 in conference action.

CNU led 22-10 with 13:54 left in the opening half, but the Bishops scored nine straight points to cut the lead to three. Seven minutes later, Wesleyan cut the lead to one, 36-35, at the 6:21 mark. Unfortunately, Christopher Newport out-scored the Bishops 18-11 over the final six minutes, which led to a 54-46 halftime score.

In the second half, Christopher Newport increased its lead to 92-74 with 7:38 left on the clock. Wesleyan, however, would not go quietly as they hung around and chipped away at the lead. Behind the hot shooting of sophomore Jarmel Arrington, the Bishops got the lead all the way down to four with less than a minute to play, but Wesleyan could not get any closer as CNU held on for the victory.

NCWC finished 34-of-73 (47%) from the field, 7-of-20 (35%) on three-point attempts and 25-of-31
(81%) from the free throw line. Arrington scored 29 of his team-high 31 points in the second half. Trey Drake added 19 points, five rebounds and five assists, while Lenny Hall and Adam Coleman each finished with 14. Careem Corbett and Lamont Stokes contributed 10 points each.

For CNU, the Captains finished 35-of-68 (52%) from the floor, 13-of-19 (68%) from long range and 23-of-26 (89%) from the line. Davon Barton finished with a career-high 36 points. He also had six assists and five rebounds, while Thomas Whinnett had 18 points and 11 boards.

The Bishops return to action on Saturday when Greensboro College visits Everett Gymnasium.  Game time is slated for 4:00 p.m., and Wesleyan players will be honoring the USA South’s “Think Pink” initiative and Parent’s Day.
