fifth straight with 79-71 victory over Hornets
Winchester,
VA -
North Carolina
Wesleyan completed a regular season sweep over the Shenandoah
men's basketball team on Tuesday evening with a 79-71 USA
South victory in Shingleton Gymnasium. The Battling Bishops (10-9, 6-1 USA
South) now hold a 1.5 game lead over the second place
Hornets (8-13, 5-3) in the
race for the league's regular season crown.
With SU leading 46-40
following a Wayne
Washington 3-pointer at the 13:29 mark of the second
half, Wesleyan
reeled off a 14-1 run over the next 5:17 to take total
control of the contest. Having forged a 54-47 advantage with 7:47
remaining, the Bishops held at least a two-point lead the rest of the way.
The Hornets got it to that
two point deficit on two different occasions, the last with
4:54 remaining, before Wesleyan pulled away with another
big run. This spurt was 13-2 in just
1:46 and gave the visitors its biggest advantage, 13 points,
with 2:56 left.
Shenandoah began to foul in
an attempt to get back in it, but the Bishops made 12 of
their final 14 attempts from the charity stripe to ice the
victory.
Jarmel Arrington led the
Bishops with a game-high 21 points, while Trey Drake added 19.
Domarius Thomas chipped in a double-double off the bench
with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
For
Shenandoah,
Mitch
Dudley had 15 points and 11 rebounds, while
Washington finished with 14.
The Battling Bishops will
attempt to avenge their only conference loss this weekend
when they take on Christopher Newport on Saturday at 4:00
p.m. in Everett Gymnasium. Saturday will serve as Wesleyan's
"Take a Kid to the Game" day, and all kids 12 and under will
be admitted free.
