Bishop men open season with
dominating 8-0 win

- Head Coach Jason Kilby's men's
soccer squad wasted no time
asserting itself as an offensive
force in 2006. In Sunday's
season-opener, the Bishops of
North Carolina Wesleyan tallied
eight goals, four in each half,
en route to an 8-0 victory over
Hood College (0-1) in game two
of the 2006 NCWC Fall Classic.
Michael Brown paced the Bishops
(1-0) with two goals as 12
different Bishops tallied points
in the contest.
Junior Lucas Fuentes got the
scoring started just three
minutes in when he blasted home
a penalty kick at the 2:47
mark. It proved to be the
gamewinner as Bishop goalies
Renato Corte and Jeff Johnson
combined for the shutout.
Wesleyan's defense allowed only
two shots in the game.
Also scoring first-half goals
were Oz Otoo from Danny Jones,
Salvador Benitez from Fuentes,
and Justin Thompson from Stephen
Tupy.
The 4-0 halftime lead was
doubled in the second half.
Wesleyan again struck quickly in
the period as freshman Edgar
Zaldivar notched his first
collegiate goal and assist in
the first 12 minutes. Ernesto
Marquez connected on NCWC goal
number six, and Brown's two
goals rounded out the scoring.
Also collecting assists in the
second half were Thorstein
Georgsson, Marcellus Jernigan,
and Robert Henson.
Hood goalie Shawn Fernholz faced
33 NCWC shots and tallied an
impressive 16 saves on the day.
Game one saw Villa Julie College
knock off Bridgewater by a 1-0
score in overtime. Villa Julie
will now take on Hood on Monday
at 11:00 a.m. followed by NCWC
versus Bridgewater at 1:00 p.m.
