Bishop men open season with dominating 8-0 win

Rocky Mount, NC - Head Coach Jason Kilby's men's soccer squad wasted no time asserting itself as an offensive force in 2006.  In Sunday's season-opener, the Bishops of North Carolina Wesleyan tallied eight goals, four in each half, en route to an 8-0 victory over Hood College (0-1) in game two of the 2006 NCWC Fall Classic.  Michael Brown paced the Bishops (1-0) with two goals as 12 different Bishops tallied points in the contest.

Junior Lucas Fuentes got the scoring started just three minutes in when he blasted home a penalty kick at the 2:47 mark.  It proved to be the gamewinner as Bishop goalies Renato Corte and Jeff Johnson combined for the shutout.  Wesleyan's defense allowed only two shots in the game.

Also scoring first-half goals were Oz Otoo from Danny Jones, Salvador Benitez from Fuentes, and Justin Thompson from Stephen Tupy.

The 4-0 halftime lead was doubled in the second half.  Wesleyan again struck quickly in the period as freshman Edgar Zaldivar notched his first collegiate goal and assist in the first 12 minutes.  Ernesto Marquez connected on NCWC goal number six, and Brown's two goals rounded out the scoring.

Also collecting assists in the second half were Thorstein Georgsson, Marcellus Jernigan, and Robert Henson.

Hood goalie Shawn Fernholz faced 33 NCWC shots and tallied an impressive 16 saves on the day.

Game one saw Villa Julie College knock off Bridgewater by a 1-0 score in overtime.  Villa Julie will now take on Hood on Monday at 11:00 a.m. followed by NCWC versus Bridgewater at 1:00 p.m.
