Jones' game-winner sends NC Wesleyan to Sweet 16
Baltimore, MD - For the second consecutive year, the North Carolina Wesleyan men's soccer team is headed to the NCAA Sweet 16! The Bishops knocked off host Johns Hopkins University on Sunday night in Baltimore by a 2-0 score to advance to next weekend's sectional play. Senior Danny Jones (pictured) headed home the eventual game-winner in the 56th minute on an assist by Jimmy Pierce to give NCWC a 1-0 lead that they would not relinquish. The win is Wesleyan's 18th of the season, which sets a new program record.
Freshman Marco Kirsch added an insurance goal in the 61st minute when he successfully converted a penalty kick. The score was his 14th of the season and ups his point total to 42 thusfar.
On the night, Wesleyan out-shot the Blue Jays 12-11. Bishop goalie Kevin Quicker made three stops en route to his fifth win. JHU keeper Matt Mierley thwarted four shots for the Blue Jays.
Up next for the Bishops in sectional play is Loras College (21-0-1). Loras and Wesleyan each enjoyed undefeated regular seasons this fall.
