Greensboro wins third straight tournament championship, defeats Methodist 2-0

Rocky Mount, NC - Freshman Deng Abiel scored in the 42nd minute off an assist from Quinton Hurdle as Greensboro College defeated Methodist University, 2-0, in the USA South Championship Match at Scalf Field on Saturday. With the win, GC advances to its 13th NCAA Division III men's soccer tournament in the past 14 years. It's also the third straight year The Pride has won the tournament under Coach Bill Brady. On each occasion, Greensboro has done so on a neutral field or as the visitors.

The Pride (13-4-3) got an insurance goal late in the game. After Troy Mellanson fired a shot, Bobby Dabbs collected the rebound and fired into an open net for the tally.

Methodist (12-7-1) played most of the second half with 10 men due to a second yellow card. The Monarchs, however, had good scoring chance in the 75th minute. GC defender George Bowen, however, cleared the ball just before it reached the goal line.

GC keeper Kurt Gardiner recorded his third shutout of the tournament to earn MVP honors.
