WEEKLY SPOTLIGHT:  Kazakhstan National Team to visit Everett Gymnasium

Rocky Mount, NC - The North Carolina Wesleyan men's basketball team will open its 2007-08 home slate on Friday night in Everett Gymnasium with its final exhibition before beginning regular season play.  The opponent, however, is not your typical adversary that endures a two to three hour bus trip before tip-off.  In this case, the opponent traveled 6,130 miles and adds some international flavor to the Bishops' schedule.  On Friday night, Wesleyan is pleased to host the Astana Tigers of the Kazakhstan National Team at 7:30 p.m.

The KNT is in the midst of a southeastern tour of the United States that includes roughly 15 games against area colleges and universities.  The tour is facilitated by Athletes in Action, a ministry of Campus Crusade for Christ International, one of the world’s largest non-profit, interdenominational organizations in the world.  Founded by Bill and Vonette Bright in 1951, Campus Crusade has more than 26,000 staff members and a ministry presence in 190 countries around the world.

AIA was founded in 1966 by Dave Hannah and subsequently partnered with CCFC.  Wesleyan head coach John Thompson managed to get the Bishops on the Tigers' slate through a personal connection.

“In a world consisting of thousands of dialects and cultures, sport is a universal language with the capacity to share a universe-changing message of hope," says AIA president Bill Pugh.

NAMESTAN is an international ministry of Athletes in Action and incorporates eight countries in North Africa and nineteen countries in the Middle East Area of Asia.  It extends to the “stans” of the former Soviet Union, including Kazakhstan.  The goal of AIA NAMESTAN is to initiate and accelerate a spiritual movement in the sport world of this region.

So be sure to come out to Everett Gymnasium on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. to check out Wesleyan in action against the Kazakhstan National Team.  It's a once-in-a-lifetime game for our Battling Bishops, our fans, and our community.
