WEEKLY SPOTLIGHT: NCWC
Golf... An up & coming program for men AND women!
Rocky
Mount, NC
- Head coach Mark
Cole took the reigns of the North Carolina Wesleyan golf
program in May of 2007. Now entering just his second
season, Cole has turned Battling Bishop golf into one of the
fastest growing programs in the USA South, if not the
nation! The Bishops improved tremendously over the
course of the 2007-08 season, and with the largest and
perhaps most talented recruiting class in the past 30 years,
Wesleyan should be even better in 2008-09. Most
impressively, however, the growth and advancement brought on
by Cole has led to the addition of a women's program next
fall!
Cole could not be
more excited about his current squad, as well as this newest
addition to North Carolina Wesleyan Athletics.
"Anytime a program can expand its
realm of opportunities to a greater mass, the better
potential for higher functioning skill levels," said Cole. "
We have a great facility, an energetic staff, and an open
palette to develop a program that could reach regional and
national levels... What’s not to get excited about?"
Cole's 2008-09 men's
roster features eight players, three of which return from
last season in the form of Dylan Bedy, Cole Brantner, and
Todd Smith. Highlighting the newcomers on the roster
are four freshman and one transfer, including Wesleyan's
first ever Swedish golfer.

Unlike 2007, the Bishops have opted
for a markedly tougher fall schedule in 2008 that
includes two tournaments at Ford's Colony Golf Club,
NCWC's home course. The first tournament will open
the 2008-09 season and will be hosted by the Bishops on
Saturday, September 6th. The First Annual Ford's
Colony Fall Challenge, as it has been named, will
feature nine teams and 44 total golfers, including two
individual female players from Louisburg College and
Surry Community College.

Wesleyan is not just making waves
locally, however. Coach Cole was recently interviewed
on The Golf Channel as one of several recruiters attending
the first ever golf combine hosted by UnderArmour in Hilton
Head, SC. During his brief spot, Cole was able to
bring NCWC golf onto the national scene.
With all the positive energy
circulating around the Battling Bishop golfers, the College
has shown its support by adding a golf minor to its
curriculum. Wesleyan students may achieve this minor
through 18 hours of coursework and an advanced internship
currently set up through Ford's Colony.
If anyone is interested in receiving
more information on the men's and/or women's golf program at
North Carolina Wesleyan, please feel free to contact Coach
Cole at 252.985.5302 or
mcole@ncwc.edu. More information, as well as a
link for women's golf, will be posted on the Battling
Bishops' official athletics website in the coming weeks!
