NC Wesleyan announces 2009 Athletics Hall of
Fame class
Rocky
Mount, NC
-
Since 1999, North Carolina Wesleyan College
has honored 42 former athletes,
administrators, teams, coaches, and
contributors by enshrining them in its
Athletics Hall of Fame. These individuals
have created a higher standard for Battling
Bishop athletics and were selected based on
their outstanding accomplishments and/or
contributions to the College. This year’s
class meets these same standards and will
comprise the 11th group of honorees. The
North Carolina Wesleyan Department of
Athletics is pleased to announce that Terry
Britt of men’s golf, Marquis McDougald of
men’s basketball, and Chris Webb of women’s
soccer and basketball
have been chosen to comprise its 2009 Hall
of Fame class.
“Our annual Hall of Fame ceremony is always
exciting,” said Director of Athletics John
Thompson. “I consider it a privilege to
honor those who have brought such remarkable
success to Wesleyan athletics.”

Terry
Britt enjoyed tremendous success as a
member of the Battling Bishop men’s golf
program from 1970-73 and is just the second
inductee in his sport (Dick Shannonhouse,
’00). A three time Most Valuable Player
(1970, 1972, 1973), he remains one of only
two players in program history to garner MVP
accolades on three occasions.
After serving in the Air Force until
November of 1968, Britt joined head coach
Don Scalf’s Battling Bishops for the 1969-70
season. The talented freshman quickly made a
name for himself by earning his first MVP
award and leading North Carolina Wesleyan to
the first of its four consecutive Dixie
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
Championships.
Britt married in the fall of 1970 and did
not play the 1970-71 season to allow his new
bride, Debbie, to complete her undergraduate
degree at UNC Greensboro. He returned to
his native Rocky Mount the following season
and promptly picked up where he left off by
earning the second of his MVP nods and the
first of his two First Team All-DIAC
selections. Britt, in fact, is one of only
two players in history to twice be named a
First Team All-Conference performer. That
same 1971-72 season also saw the Bishops
pick up their third straight league title.
His final Most Valuable Player and
All-Conference awards came during Wesleyan’s
1972-1973 slate, marking the fourth and
final DIAC Conference Championship for the
program. Britt completed his career as one
of the most decorated golfers in program
history, having led his team to a 34-15
head-to-head record over his three seasons…
a span of success that remains unprecedented
today.
“Terry was the most conscientious
student-athlete that we ever had,” said
Scalf of his former player. “He was an
‘ace’ of a man, whose humility and work
ethic set examples for our younger players.
Terry was a major key to the program’s
success during his time at the College, and
he is well-deserving of this honor.”
Britt received his bachelor’s degree in
Business Administration in 1973 and now
works as a merchandise supervisor with
Wal-Mart. He and Debbie currently reside in
Charlotte and have one son, Lane, who is a
firefighter in Carolina Beach. His parents,
Clyde and Mary Mac still reside in nearby
Tarboro.
Commented Britt on his selection, “I
am honored to receive this recognition. My
initial reaction was surprise, and I must
admit, pride. When I consider any special
moments, whether business or personal, this
acknowledgment will always be at the top of
my list of best memories.”

Marquis
McDougald
becomes the eighth player from the North
Carolina Wesleyan men’s basketball program
to garner Hall of Fame status. The
program’s all-time leading rebounder with
872 career boards, the former All-American
and three-time MVP also ranks third all-time
in scoring with 1,710 career points.
A native of Raleigh, NC, McDougald began his
Hall of Fame career with the Bishops during
the 1995-96 season. After averaging nine
points and six rebounds per game as a
freshman, he enjoyed a break-out year during
his sophomore campaign, averaging 18 points
and 10 boards per contest en route to Most
Valuable Player, All-Conference,
All-Tournament, and All-Region honors. The
6’7” McDougald followed his sophomore season
up with an even better junior year, again
averaging a double-double with 19 points and
10 rebounds per game. The 1997-98 season
also saw him earn the second of his three
MVP, All-Conference, and All-Region awards.
McDougald’s 1998-99 senior slate remains one
of the best in North Carolina Wesleyan
history. Not only did he set new season
records for points (621) and rebounds (281),
but he also became the first and only
Battling Bishop to ever garner Conference
Player of the Year accolades. McDougald was
later honored as the first All-American of
head coach John Thompson’s coaching career;
in the process, he gained notoriety as the
first NC Wesleyan men’s basketball player to
receive All-American status since Roger
Taylor in 1969-70.
After wrapping up his four-year Battling
Bishop career with one final honor – 1998-99
NC Wesleyan Male Athlete of the Year –
McDougald went on to play professionally in
the USBL before taking his talents overseas
to Belgium and Finland. Thompson is
delighted to see his former star receive
Hall of Fame recognition.
“Marquis was obviously an outstanding
talent,” said Thompson, continuing, “but one
of the things that stands out about him was
how much he improved each year. He was a
very humble young man… so humble that I’m
still not sure he knows how good he was.”

Chris
Webb
is proud to represent the women’s soccer and
basketball programs as a 2009 Hall of Fame
inductee. The all-time leading scorer in
soccer and the all-time assists leader in
basketball, she is regarded as one of the
best dual-sport athletes to ever play for
the Battling Bishops.
As a member of the women’s soccer program
from 1991-1994, Webb made her mark as a
prolific scorer by tallying a program-record
63 career goals and 154 points. Her 28
career assists rank second all-time, while
she currently ranks in the top five in
season goals (19), assists (10), and points
(45). Perhaps most impressively, Webb
remains the only player in history to notch
19 goals in a season on two separate
occasions (1991, 1993), both of which were
program records at the time of her
departure.
Webb was a four-time First Team
All-Conference and All-Region performer
during her career – the first player in
soccer history to attain such a feat.
The 1992-93 NCWC Female Athlete of the Year,
she
led her teams to an impressive 51-16-7 over
four seasons of play, including two regular
season conference championships, four NCAA
Tournament berths, and the program’s only
NCAA Final Four appearance. She becomes the
third inductee in women’s soccer and joins
former teammates Julie Duerler (‘06) and
Trish Parker (‘07) as honorees.
The Dayton, OH native brought more of the
same success to the hardwood. She garnered
First-Team All-Conference honors during her
1994-95 senior year after setting program
records for assists (204) and steals (94)
that still hold true today. Webb, in fact,
led the entire nation in assists that
season, and the talented guard still holds
career records in those same two categories
with 606 assists and 281 steals over her
four-year career.
Webb helped lead head coach John Brackett’s
Battling Bishops to a 63-41 combined record
over four seasons, including the only 20-win
season in program history (1993-94). That
same 1993-94 season saw women’s basketball
earn its first regular season and conference
tournament championships, as well as the
program’s first NCAA Tournament berth. The
fifth inductee in women’s hoops, Webb
finished her career as a member of the
1,000-point club with 1,079 career points.
After graduating from in NCWC in 1996 with a
degree in Criminal Justice, the bulk of
Webb’s career has been spent coaching
soccer. After serving as an assistant at
East Carolina University alongside her
former Wesleyan coach Rob Donnenwirth (‘07),
she took her talents to Elon University,
where she was head coach of the Phoenix for
three seasons. Webb is currently working
for the Arizona Youth Soccer Association as
its Olympic Development Program
Administrator. She is humbled to receive
this honor.
“I was very proud to hear about my selection
to NC Wesleyan's Hall of Fame,” said Webb.
“It is an honor to be placed into the same
category of so many great athletes and
coaches.”
She continued, “I enjoyed both my soccer and
basketball careers at NC Wesleyan and the
many successes that both teams achieved. I
look forward to giving thanks to all those
that influenced my playing careers.”

The Department of Athletics extends sincere
congratulations to each of the 2009
inductees, whose contributions to the
overall mission of North Carolina Wesleyan
College have been exhibited in their
successes and accomplishments both on and
off the field. To these inductees, the
Battling Bishops offer thanks and admiration
by bestowing this honor upon them.
A formal induction ceremony will be held
during this year’s Homecoming festivities on
October 24th.
