Fulford pitches Lady Bishops to semis with 6-0 shutout of Ferrum

BURLINGTON, N.C. - Sophomore pitcher Libby Fulford threw a complete game shutout to lead her 4th-seeded Bishops to a 6-0 win over 3rd-seeded Ferrum in Friday's quarterfinal action at the USA South Softball Tournament.

Ferrum ends its season with a 21-21 record, while Wesleyan is now 20-17 overall and advances to play 2nd-seeded Greensboro at 10:00 a.m. in Saturday's semifinals.

Neither team could scratch a run through the first four innings as Fulford and FC hurler Krysteyn Matherly matched each other pitch-for-pitch.

The Lady Bishops, however, took control of the game in the top of the fifth by plating four runs on three hits and one Panther error.  Shelley Hinson started the rally with a walk, while Krystal Newbern and Ashlee Bass followed suit with singles to load the bases.

After a fielder's choice allowed Hinson to score the game's first run, Whitney Moshier (pictured) drew a bases loaded walk to give Wesleyan a 2-0 lead.  Hannah Hardy then pushed the lead to 4-0 with an RBI-single that plated Bass, followed by a throwing error that scored Tucker.

The Lady Bishops added two insurance runs on a Bass inside-the-park two-run homerun in the following inning, and the 6-0 lead would prove to be more than enough for Fulford, who moved to 13-9 on the season with the win.  She scattered nine hits and walked none.

Matherly took the loss for the Panthers, allowing four runs on six hits in 4.1 innings of work.

Bass had a stellar game in a 4-for-4 performance for the Bishops, driving in two runs and scoring two.  Tucker and Newbern also had two hits apiece.
