Slade pitches Pride to 4-0 win over Averett

BURLINGTON, N.C. - Senior hurler Kristen Slade (pictured) tossed a complete game shutout in game two of the 2006 USA South Conference Tournament, leading her 2nd-seeded Pride of Greensboro College to a 4-0 win over 7th-seeded Averett University.

The Pride scored the game's first run in the bottom of the second inning.  Ashley Pennington singled and later scored from second on a fielding error by AU second baseman Erin Anderson.

Greensboro added three insurance runs in the sixth, the first of which came on Averett's fourth fielding error of the game.  The Pride's final two runs of the contest came on a RBI-single to center by Joy Daniels and an RBI-sac fly by Jessica Clack.

It was more than enough offense for Slade, who allowed just three Cougar hits, walked two, and struck out 10.  She moves to 9-3 on the season.

AU pitcher Brittany Estep took the loss, allowing three runs on nine hits in 5.1 innings of work.

Offensively, Jenee Johnson was 3-for-4 for Greensboro, while Pennington was 2-for-2.  Darlene Shipe, Ellie Blackburn, and Stefanie Clayton each had one hit for the Cougars.

Greensboro (27-11) will now take on the winner of game four, which pits 3rd-seeded Ferrum against 6th-seeded Peace, at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday.  Averett (10-28) awaits the loser of game three, which features 4th-seeded North Carolina Wesleyan and 5th-seeded Christopher Newport, at 11:00 a.m. on Friday.
