NC Wesleyan rides six-run first inning to 6-1 win over CNU

BURLINGTON, N.C. - The first inning of game three between 4th-seeded North Carolina Wesleyan and 5th-seeded Christopher Newport saw the two squads combine for seven runs.  The Lady Bishops forged a 6-1 lead, and it would be all the offense the game would see as neither team could scratch another run.

CNU took an early 1-0 lead on an RBI-single by Andrea Rohde in the first inning.  The lead was shortlived, however, as the Lady Bishops batted around and erupted for six runs in bottom half of the frame.

Shelley Hinson, Ashlee Bass, Whitney Moshier, Libby Fulford, and Katie Dunavant all collected singles in the inning for Wesleyan, with Dunavant’s driving in two runs.  Five of the runs were unearned as the Captains committed two fielding errors.

After allowing three hits in the first inning, Fulford (pictured) settled in on the mound to retire 11 consecutive batters. She allowed just five hits in the final six innings of play en route to her 12th win of the season.

Janet Fairchild (11-8) took the loss for CNU, although like Fulford, she also tossed a solid final six innings and allowed just three hits.  For the game, Fairchild allowed six runs (one earned) on eight hits, while walking one and striking out six.

Offensively, Fulford and Bass were each 2-for-3 for the Bishops, while eight different Captains collected hits.

North Carolina Wesleyan will now take on top-seeded Methodist at 3:00 p.m., while CNU will play Shenandoah on Friday at 11:00 a.m.
