Ferrum gives higher seeds a clean sweep with 5-3 win over Peace

BURLINGTON, N.C. - Ferrum College gave the higher seeds a clean sweep of the 2006 USA South Conference Softball Tournament first round with a 5-3 victory over Peace College.

The third-seeded Lady Panthers (20-17) now move on to face second seeded Greensboro in Thursday's 3:00 p.m. winner's bracket quarterfinal. No. 6 Peace (23-16) falls into the loser's bracket, where it will face seventh-seeded Averett Friday morning at 1:00 p.m. in an elimination game.

Ferrum got all of the runs it would need in its first at-bat. FC scored four runs on five hits and two Pacers errors - Lauren Rizzo provided the big blow with a double that Kathleen Gulino from second base. Gulino had led off the frame with a single.

Peace got back into the game with one run in the second and two in the third off of Ferrum starter Laura Terry. With the bases loaded and two outs, Lady Panthers coach Vickie Van Kleeck went to reliever Kim Cox, who struck out Summer Greer for the third out of the inning.

Cox (11-11) allowed just four hits over the final 4.1 innings to earn the win. She struck out four, allowed just one runner to reach third base and retired six of the final seven hitters she faced.

Lauren Pleasant (8-6) went the distance for PC in the loss. She allowed five runs (two earned) on eight nits and one walk while striking out three.

Lindsay Etherton and Kristina Wilhelm were both 2-for-3 for the victors with Nicole Shoemaker getting three hits in four at-bats for Peace.
