Methodist advances to semis with 4-3 win over Wesleyan

BURLINGTON, N.C. - Methodist College grabbed the first spot in the USA South Conference softball tournament semi-finals with a 4-3 victory over NC Wesleyan Thursday afternoon.

Top-seeded Methodist (35-6) broke a 3-3 with one run in the bottom of the sixth against the Lady Bishops (18-17). MC now moves onto face Greensboro tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. in the winner's bracket final. The winner of that game will have two chances to win the tournament on Saturday.

NC Wesleyan enters the loser's bracket and gets the winner of the Peace/Averett 1:00 p.m. elimination game.

The Lady Monarchs needed that fourth run after NCWC tied the game with two runs in the third and one in the fifth. Methodist's 3-0 advantage had come from a two-run second along with a single run in the fourth.

MC scored the winning run when catcher Lisa Jackson walked, and advanced to third when the Lady Bishops committed a throwing error on Adrienne Acosta's sacrifice bunt attempt. Rebekah Kelly then grounded out to first base, scoring Jackson on the play.

Jackson finished the day 1-for-1 with two RBI and two runs scored - she plated the two runs in the second on single up the middle. This made a winner of Jennifer Sorensen (16-3), who allowed three runs (one earned) on nine hits in the complete game. She also had 11 strikeouts.

Libby Fulford (12-9) took the loss. She allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits and five walks.

Whitney Moshier, Tamra Gilbert and Shelley Hinson all had two hits for NCWC.
