Greensboro downs Ferrum 7-3 to advance to semifinals

BURLINGTON, N.C. - Second-seeded Greensboro College rallied over No. 3 Ferrum College Thursday afternoon to claim the second spot in the USA South Conference softball tournament winner's bracket final at Springwood Park.

Greensboro (28-11) erased a 2-0 deficit with two runs in the fourth and seized control with three in the fifth and two more in the sixth. Ferrum (20-18) scored a single run in the bottom of the seventh, but could get no closer.

The Pride now gets top-seeded Methodist in Friday's 3:00 p.m. winner's bracket final. The winner of that game will have two chances to win the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament on Saturday.

Ferrum is thrown into the loser's bracket, where they await the winner of the Shenandoah/Christopher Newport at 1:00 p.m..

Pinch hitter Samantha Salter provided the game-winning hit for GC with a two-run single up the middle that scored Ashley Pennington and Whitney Williams. Those two women reached on a walk and a single, respectively.

Erica Brown improved to 7-3 on the spring with 5.1 innings of solid pitching she allowed two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out two.

Kim Cox (11-12) took the loss in relief. She gave up seven runs (five earned) on 10 hits in 3.1 innings.

Lauren Manning was 4-for-4 for the victors while Williams, Jenee Johnson and Jennifer Simms had two hits each. Trica Moore and Lindsay Etherton were both 2-for-4 for FC.
