Averett advances with 4-1 upset of Peace

BURLINGTON, N.C. - Seventh-seeded Averett University recorded one of two Friday morning upsets with a 4-1 win over 6th-seeded Peace College.  The Cougars got a two-run single by Melanie Gilbert in the fifth that broke a 1-1 tie and proved to be the difference in the game.

Averett (11-28) advances to take on 4th-seeded North Carolina Wesleyan at 1:00 p.m. Friday, while Peace ends its season with a 23-17 overall record.

The Pacers took an early 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the third.  Vanessa Bryan led off the inning with a single, and pinch runner Kenni Seagroves came all the way around to score on two Cougar errors sandwiched around a groundout to third.

Averett answered with a run in the fourth.  Gilbert led off the inning with a single and later scored on a fielding error by Peace.  The Cougars attempted to take the lead on single by Meredith Schwane, but Pacer centerfielder Pleasant gunned a strike to home plate that cut down AU's Ellie Blackburn.

The game remained tied at 1-1 until the fifth when Gilbert provided the eventual game-winner.  The Cougars went on to add an insurance run in the sixth for the 4-1 final.

Stephanie Greene (3-13, pictured) earned the win for AU, going the distance and allowing just one run on four hits. Joanie Blevins (12-10) took the loss for Peace after tossing seven innings and giving up four runs on seven hits.

Erica Tucker was 2-for-3 to lead the Pacers, while Melanie Gilbert was 2-4 for Averett.
