CAPTAINS ADVANCE TO SUNDAY'S
CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
BURLINGTON, N.C.
- Christopher Newport
University (32-8-1) advanced to the
championship game of the 2008 USA South
Tournament with a 9-1 win over Averett
University (8-22). With no losses, the Captains
will have two
chances on Sunday to secure the
championship and NCAA automatic bid.
CNU jumped
out on top early thanks to a five-
run second inning. Renee Ashworth
capped
the rally with a three-run homerun to left.
Averett got on the
board in the fourth when Amy
Green singled home Erin Anderson, but the
Captains got the run back in their half of the
inning on a Meagan Morris
blast to right.
CNU's Janet
Fairchild did the rest on the
mound. Fairchild (8-4) went the distance,
allowing just the one run on three hits.
Dennison (8-19) suffered her
first loss of the tournament.
Averett,
the tourney's ninth seed, will now face the winner of
Methodist/Greensboro at
10:00 a.m. on Sunday in hopes of a rematch with
the Captains in the championship
game.
