Ferrum eliminates #7 NC Wesleyan
IN EXTRAS, 4-2
BURLINGTON, N.C. - Ferrum College earned a
4-2 win in extra innings to eliminate
7th-
seeded North Carolina Wesleyan in
Saturday’s
first game. The 6th-seeded Panthers held
a
2-0 lead for most of the game but were
forced
into extras when the Bishops plated two
runs
with two outs in the seventh. Ferrum,
however,
crossed two in the eighth to advance.
FC’s Lauren Thurman and Joelyn Arthur
drove
in the Panthers’ first two runs on a
double and
sac-fly, respectively. The 2-0 lead
stood for
most of the game.
In the bottom of the seventh, a hit and
walk
placed NCWC runners on first and second
with
two outs. Down to their last strike, the
Bishops’
Jessica Poindexter tied the game with a
double to left center.
The Panthers’ Megan Barger and Jalisa
Poe
each drove in runs in the eighth, while
pitcher
Katie Duff got out of a bases loaded jam
in the
bottom of the frame to seal the victory.
Duff (8-9) turned in a solid performance in the
circle, giving up four runs on five hits
and striking out nine in the complete game effort.
Opposing pitcher Libby Fulford (12-14)
was nearly equal to the task, allowing four runs
on five hits over eight complete.
The Panthers (19-22) advance to play at
2:00 p.m. versus the loser of game 11 between
#4 Greensboro and #9 Averett. North
Carolina Wesleyan (18-19) sees its 2008 season
come to an end.
