AVERETT EARNS FIRST UPSET OF TOURNEY WITH 6-0 VICTORY
BURLINGTON, N.C.
- The 9th-seeded Cougars
of Averett University benefited from five
Meredith fielding errors en route to a 6-0 first
round win over the 8th-seeded Avenging
Angels. The upset was the first of the 2008
USA South Conference Tournament.
Averett scratched the
game's first run in the top
of the third when Erin Anderson singled and
eventually came around to score on an Angel
fielding error.
The 1-0 lead would have
been enough for
Cougar hurler Sandra Dennison (6-19), who
allowed just three hits in the complete-game
shutout.
MC's Arielle Stout (5-9)
only allowed five hits
and two earned runs in the contest.
The Cougars (6-19) will
face top-seeded Shenandoah University at 1:00 p.m.. Meredith
(10-25) will take on the loser of game four between #3 Methodist and #6
Ferrum at 3:00
p.m. in an elimination
game.
