FERRUM SURVIVES AND ADVANCES WITH 7-2 Win

  BURLINGTON, N.C. - Sixth-seeded Ferrum
College made No. 8 Meredith the second team
eliminated from the USA South Conference
softball Tournament with a 7-2 victory Friday
afternoon in an elimination game at

Springwood Park.

With the victory, the Panthers (18-22) advance
to a 10:00 a.m. Saturday contest against NC
 Wesleyan. The seventh-seeded Bishops

opened the tournament with a 13-1 victory over
Mary Baldwin before losing 5-3 to No. 2 CNU in
 the winner's bracket quarterfinals.

FC took a lead it would not relinquish with one
run in the first off of MC starter Valerie Scherrer
(1-6).  Starting and winning pitcher Kryestyn
Matherly drew a one-out walk, advanced to
second on an error by Meredith (10-26)
centerfielder Amber Littesy and scored an
unearned run on a fielder's choice.

The Panthers scored two runs in the third,
three in the fourth and one in the fifth to allow Matherly to put things on cruise control.

Matherly (6-8) allowed only a bloop single in the fourth before Meredith pushed across a
pair in the sixth. Arielle Stout was responsible for both of those runs as she knocked her
10th home run of the season over the wall in right center with two outs in the sixth. Becki
Roebock scored ahead of Stout after reaching on a triple to right.

The senior righted things in the seventh, working a clean final inning to pick up her sixth
victory this year. She tossed a five-hitter, striking out five and walking none in the
 complete game performance.

Scherrer gave up just the unearned run on one hit and two walks in 1.0 innings.

Roebock pitched the final five innings for the Angels.

Meghan Farrell finished the afternoon 2 for 3 with three RBI for the Panthers.
