METHODIST RALLIES TO DEFEAT #6 FERRUM, 6-3
BURLINGTON,
N.C. -
Third-seeded Methodist
University rallied from a two-run
deficit Friday
morning to down No. 6 Ferrum 6-3 in the
first
round of the USA South Conference
softball
Tournament at Springwood Park.
The victory sends the No. 21 in the
nation
Monarchs (33-8) into the winner's
bracket
semi-finals against the winner of the
No. 2
CNU vs No. 7 NC Wesleyan game.
Ferrum (17-22) plays at 3:00 today in an
elimination game against No. 8 Meredith.
MU scored what proved to the
game-winning
run as part of a four-run sixth. After
taking a 3-2
lead on Tabitha Stephenson's RBI single,
Megan Hutson gave the Monarchs a
four-run
lead with a three-run home run over the
leftfield fence.
The Panthers loaded the bases in the
seventh, Methodist turned to closer Hannah
Stutts to finish out the contest. Stutts
got a fielder's choice and a groundout to short to
secure the victory and her third save of
the spring.
Stutts saved it for Emily Beck (7-4),
who allowed three runs (two earned) on 10 hits and
one walk in 6.1 innings. She struck out
three.
Freshman Katie Duff (7-9) went the
distance for FC. She was charged with six runs
(three earned) on seven hits and two
walks.
