2ND-SEEDED
CNU DOWNS 7TH-SEEDED NC WESLEYAN, 5-3
BURLINGTON,
N.C. -
Christopher Newport
survived North Carolina Wesleyan in the
Captains’ first action of the 2008 USA
South
Tournament, holding on for the 5-3 victory. Up
4-2 in the fifth, CNU’s Lindsay Kelly
got out of a
bases loaded jam with no outs and allowed
just one run over three innings
to preserve the
Captain victory.
Wesleyan plated the game’s first run in
the
opening frame when Ashlee Bass tripled
home Whitney Moshier. Bass was later
gunned down at the plate by CNU’s Ashley
Mani when she tried to tag on a Chelsea
Gentry flyout.
CNU quickly erased the 1-0 deficit with
a two-
run first. Katie Moyers and Margit Severin each
recorded an RBI, while a Kristen Nickloy two-
run homer in the second gave the Captains a
4-1 advantage.
The Bishops rallied in the fifth as
Moshier, Bass, and Libby Fulford all recorded hits to
start the inning. Fulford’s plated
Moshier, while a bases-loaded walk to Payton Gordon
made the score 4-3 Captains.
Moyers drove home a key insurance run in
the Captain sixth and finished the game with
two hits and two RBI. Megan Morris went
3-for-4 to lead all batters, while Bass paced
the Bishops with a 2-for-3 showing at
the plate.
Janet Fairchild (7-4) earned the win,
allowing three runs on five hits in four complete,
while Kelly picked up her first save of
the season. Fulford (12-13) suffered loss after
giving up five runs (four earned) on ten
hits in the complete game effort.
CNU (30-8-1) will now take on #3
Methodist at Noon on Saturday. The Bishops (18-18)
will play an elimination game at 10:00
a.m. versus the winner of #8 Meredith and #6
Ferrum.
