AVERETT STUNS TOP-SEEDED SHENANDOAH, 3-1
BURLINGTON,
N.C. -
No. 9 Averett
registered
the biggest upset of the USA South
Conference softball Tournament Friday
afternoon with a 3-1 victory over regular
season champion Shenandoah.
The win puts Averett (7-21) into the
winner’s
bracket semi-finals against fourth-seeded
Greensboro Saturday at noon.
Shenandoah
(28-11) has a 10:00 a.m. game against the
winner of the Mary Baldwin/Peace
contest.
Junior pitcher Sandra Dennison (6-19)
tossed
a three-hitter to earn her second victory of
the day. Dennison struck out three and
did not
walk a batter as she ended SU pitcher
Katie Haskins’ personal 12-game winning
streak.
The Cougars got what proved to be the
game-winning margin with two runs on four hits
in the fifth.
Sophomore Hayley Brooks led off with a
single to left-center before scoring on
Dennison’s double to left. One batter
later, Dennison advanced to third on Sara
Lassiter’s single to left and eventually
scored on an infield single by Ashley Smith.
Averett had taken the early lead in the
third on a solo shot by first baseman Emily New.
SU tied it in the bottom of the frame on
two hits, the second an RBI double by freshman
Cat Pruiett.
Pruiett plated classmate Renoula Jones, who had reached on a one-out
infield single.
Dennison finished the day 2 for 3 with
an RBI to lead the AU offense.
