Bishop softball splits pair at Ferrum College Tournament

Salem, VA - Behind a solid offensive performance by freshman Brittany Nichols, the North Carolina Wesleyan softball team was able to split a pair of games at this weekend's Ferrum College Tournament, falling to Roanoke and Christopher Newport before bouncing back to earn victories over Hunter and Lycoming. Nichols went 7-for-12 at the plate with four homeruns, two doubles, and six RBI. The Bishops are now 7-3 on the season.

Wesleyan dropped a 6-5 heartbreaker to Roanoke in Saturday's first game. The Bishops held a slim 5-3 advantage entering the bottom of the sixth, but Roanoke tied the game at 5-5 on a two-run homer. After holding NCWC scoreless in their half of the seventh, Roanoke plated the winning run on a sac-fly RBI.

Bishop hurler Libby Fulford suffered her first loss of the season, while Ashlee Bass paced the offensive effort with a 3-for-4 showing at the plate.

CNU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the tourney's second game, but rain suspended play in the first inning. The game picked up where it left off on Sunday morning, and the Captains went on to take an 11-3 decision in five innings.

Bass was 2-for-3 and Jessica Poindexter 1-for-2 with two RBI.  Kacie Brandes took the loss.

Wesleyan snapped its three-game skid with a 6-2 win over Hunter College on Sunday afternoon. Nichols led the Bishop offense by blasting her third homerun of the tournament, while Alexis Gallop turned in a 2-for-4 performance with a double and three RBI.  Whitney Moshier also homered.

Fulford (4-1) earned the win by going the distance, scattering four hits and striking out six.

In NCWC's final game, the Bishops cruised to a 13-4 victory over Lycoming in five innings. Nichols was 3-for-4 with another homer, double, and three RBI. Gallop was also 3-for-4.

Brandes (3-2) picked up the win, tossing a four-hitter and striking out three.

The Bishops open up USA South Conference play on Tuesday when they travel to Meredith College. Game time is slated for 2:00 p.m. in Raleigh.
