Pacers sweep Bishops in USA South softball twinbill

Rocky Mount, NC - Peace hurler Ashley Stansbury earned two wins on the mound and blasted a two-run homerun to highlight a league sweep for the Pacers over host North Carolina Wesleyan in Wednesday’s softball action at Edge Field. Peace earned a 3-0 victory in game one before earning a 5-4 win in game two. The Pacers improve to 19-9 on the season, 5-1 in USA South play, while the Bishops drop to 10-8 overall, 1-5 in conference action.

In game one, Stansbury tossed a two-hit shutout en route to the 3-0 win. Alexis Gallop and Ashlee Bass had a hit apiece for the Bishops, while Kenni Seagroves gave the Pacers all the offense they would need with a two-run single in the fourth.

Libby Fulford took the loss for Wesleyan, allowing three runs (one earned) on three hits.

Game two saw Stansbury give the Pacers a quick 2-0 lead with a two-run homer in the first. The Bishops answered with a pair of runs in their half of the frame as Fulford and Payton Gordon each recorded RBI-singles.

After both teams plated a run in the second, Peace went on top 4-3 in the fourth when Jessica Hogan walked and scored on a Bishop throwing error. Wesleyan, however, tied the game a second time with a run in the fifth. Like the Pacers, the Bishops benefited from a fielding miscue that allowed Bass to reach an eventually score.

Tied 4-4, Wesleyan had a chance to take the lead in the sixth. With the bases loaded and one out, freshman Chelsea Gentry hit a sharp grounder to shortstop that forced the runner at home. Stansbury then recorded a strikeout to end the threat.

The Pacers plated the eventual winning run in the top of the seventh, unearned. Joanie Blevins drew a two-out walk and came around to score on the Bishops’ third error of the contest.

Fulford (6-5) took the tough loss in relief, despite not giving up an earned run. Stansbury picked up her second win of the day, also in relief.

Offensively, Gallop and Gordon each went 2-for-4 for Wesleyan. Stansbury, Seagroves, and Kristyn Trogdon had two hits apiece for the Pacers.

Wesleyan travels to Averett University on Saturday. Game one is slated for 1:00 p.m.
