Wesleyan softball sweeps Averett by 7-3 and 10-2 scores

Danville, NC - In Saturday afternoon USA South softball action, North Carolina Wesleyan earned a twinbill sweep on the road at Averett University by 7-3 and 10-2 scores, respectively. The Bishops used a five-run ninth inning to take game one in extra innings, while game two was called after five. Senior Libby Fulford picked up the win the opener, going the distance and allowing just one earned run. Fulford (pictured) was also 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI. Freshman Kacie Brandes recorded the win in the finale.

The Bishops (12-8, 3-5 USA South) took an early advantage in the third inning of game one. After a pair of walks put Jessica Poindexter on second base, she eventually scored on a single up the middle by junior Whitney Moshier. Wesleyan held the 1-0 advantage all the way to the bottom of the seventh.

In the seventh, the Cougars’ (1-15, 0-8 USA South) Emily New led off the inning with a double down the left field line. Sandra Dennison then smacked another double to the right field wall that scored New.

Each team scratched a run in the eighth before NCWC broke the game open with five runs on five hits and a pair of errors in the ninth. Averett crossed a single run in the bottom of the frame but was unable to mount a substantial rally.

In game two, the Bishops took advantage of an error in the second inning to score seven runs (only one earned) on seven hits. Averett scored a run in both the third and fourth innings, but Wesleyan answered with runs of their own.

At the conclusion of five innings, the Bishops held a 10-2 advantage and the game was called. Brandes moved to 4-2 with the win, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits.

Erin Anderson led the Cougars’ offense with four hits on the day. Dennison had three hits and one RBI, while Heather Trainum and New each tallied two hits and two runs. Fulford led the Bishops with five hits, two runs, and two RBI. Moshier also tallied five hits over the two games.

The Bishops return to action on Tuesday when they play host to USA South rival Christopher Newport University at Edge Field.
