Wesleyan swept by Ferrum in USA South softball action

Rocky Mount, NC - In Tuesday’s USA South softball action, Ferrum College picked up two 5-1 wins over North Carolina Wesleyan at Edge Field to complete a league sweep of the Bishops. The Panthers scored four runs in the seventh inning of game one to break a 1-1 tie, while a five-run first inning proved to be the difference in game two. Ferrum moves to 12-18 on the season, 6-8 in conference play. Wesleyan is now 13-13 overall, 4-10 in the USA South.

In the opener, both teams scratched a run in the first inning as Ferrum’s Megan Barger and Wesleyan’s Ashlee Bass each collected an RBI.

The game would remained tied at 1-1 until the seventh when the Panthers plated four runs (two earned) on three hits and an error. Michelle Dunstan delivered the big blow with a bases loaded double to left center that scored two.

FC’s Katie Duff picked up the win in the circle, scattering three singles and allowing just one run. She also struck out seven in the complete game effort. Libby Fulford suffered the loss, giving up five runs (two earned) on eight hits and striking out six.

The Panthers jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning of game two. Lauren Rizzo and Dunstan each drove in runs, while Duff blasted a three-run homerun to left field. Wesleyan managed just one run on a Fulford RBI-single in the fifth.

The 5-1 lead was more than enough for Kryestyn Matherly, who went the distance and gave up just one run on seven hits. NCWC’s Tiffany McCord settled in after a rocky first inning to toss seven complete, allowing five runs (all earned) on 12 hits.

The Bishops return to action on Saturday when they host a USA South twinbill with Mary Baldwin College on Parent’s Day. Game one is slated for a 1:00 p.m. start.
