AVERETT SURVIVES GREENSBORO
IN ELIMINATION GAME, 3-2
BURLINGTON, N.C. --
The Averett Cougars defeated the Greensboro Pride 3-2 in
a
Saturday afternoon elimination game at
Springwood Park. Averett next plays N.C.
Wesleyan in the 4 p.m. for the chance to
move to the final day of the tournament.
Averett
got on the board in the top of the first inning with an RBI-single from
Emily
Atkinson scoring Kaci Bentley. The
Cougars added another run in the top of the fifth.
Bentley started things off with a double
and scored on two errors when Hayley Brooks
was at bat.
In the bottom of fifth, Greensboro had
bases loaded with only one out. Averett pitcher
Sadra Dennison was able to get the next
batter to pop out and strike out the next batter
for the third out.
Greensboro produced their first run in
the bottom of the sixth inning with a double from
Burkett scoring Ashley Pennington. Once
again Dennison was able to keep runners
from scoring with the Pride leaving two
runners on base.
Averett added an insurance run in the
top of the seventh on single from Dennison
scoring Heather Carnes. The Pride had a
seventh inning rally that fell just short as
Greensboro could only scratch out one
run. Pennington singled to left field scoring
Brittney Teer. Dennison then struck out
Nina Chiaruttini and Kelsey Burkett for the final
two outs.
