BURLINGTON, N.C. -- The 3rd-seeded
Greensboro Pride
defeated the
6th-seeded Meredith Avenging Angels by a
2-1
score in eight innings. Greensboro won on
a hit by
Britney Smith scoring Ashley Pennington to stay in the
winner’s bracket to play on Saturday.
The
game remained scoreless until the top for the sixth
inning when
Meredith (13-18) took a 1-0 lead. Becki
Roebock scored on a suicide
squeeze bunt by Logan
Hill. Greensboro (20-16) had two runners on
in the
bottom of the inning, but was shut down by Arielle Stout.
Meredith entered the bottom of the seventh inning with a
1-0 lead.
Greensboro started the bottom of the seventh
with a solo homerun by
Brittany Teer to tie up the game.
Greensboro gained outs by a
fielder’s choice and tag out at second base. Greensboro
then loaded
the bases, with Stout striking out the third batter to put it into
extra innings.
The
Pride shut down Meredith in the top of the eighth inning. In the
bottom of the inning,
Pennington got things going with a single.
Kendra Leghart flied out to first base. Teer
then singled to short
stop to move Pennington to second. Smith then hit a single to right
field to score Pennington to give Greensboro the win.
Olivia McPherson (8-5) gained the win in the circle, only giving up
one run and one hit in
eight innings pitched. Stout (7-7) gained
the loss for Meredith , striking out eight in the
eight-inning
loss.
