FERRUM OPENS TOURNEY
WITH 5-0 SHUTOUT OF MARY BALDWIN
BURLINGTON, N.C. --
Ferrum College plated two in the
first and three in the fifth to
secure a 5-0 shutout of Mary
Baldwin College in the opening round of the
2009 USA
South Softball Tournament held at Springwood Park in
Burlington, NC.
The Panthers opened the game
with a two-spot in the
bottom of the first as Brittany Barlow recorded
an RBI-
double to plate FC's first run. An MBC fielding error later
gave
the Panthers a 2-0 lead after one, and Ferrum
went on to add three
insurance runs in the fifth.
The 5-0 advantage was more
than enough for FC
hurler Allyson Stevens (7-10), who tossed a three-hit
shutout and struck out four. MBC's Aman Miller (2-22)
suffered the loss,
allowing five runs (two earned) on six
hits.
Ferrum's Lauren Rizzo
(pictured) led all
batters with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate.
The 7th-seeded Panthers will
now face 2nd-seeded Shenandoah at 1:00 p.m., while
the 10th-seeded
Squirrels will await the loser of #4 Peace/#5 Methodist at 3:00 p.m.
