MONARCHS MERCY MARY BALDWIN TO ADVANCE

BURLINGTON, N.C. -- Methodist University knocked the
Fighting Squirrels of Mary Baldwin out of the USA South
conference tournament with a five-inning, 11-2 victory on
 Friday afternoon at Springwood Park
.  Methodist will face
Averett University in Saturday’s opening round at 10:00 am.

Emily Beck earned her third win on the season with four
innings pitched.  Beck allowed two hits, no runs earned with
one walk and two strikeouts.  Jennie Price allowed two hits,
one run earned with two strikeouts in the final inning of play.
Amanda Miller took the loss for Mary Baldwin.

Methodist took an early five-run lead on two hits and one
error in the bottom of one.  Crystal Metzgar advanced on a hit by pitch and Maggie
Gaines  reached on a throwing error and picked up an extra bag to push Metzgar to
third.  Kayla Talbert doubled to left scoring both runners.  Jody Eyler singled to left and
picked up an extra base to score the Monarchs third run.  Smart base running and a
sacrifice fly from Amanda Bass pushed the lead to five.

Mary Baldwin’s Christie Hamilton picked up a double to left in the top of two but was left
 on base.

The Monarchs continued to spread the gap with two runs on three hits in the bottom of
the frame and four more runs in the third.  Gaines, Talbert, and Eyler each earned a
single in the second while Sara Poling, Ashley Williams, and Cortney Kerns singled in
the fourth and Metzger drilled a three-RBI-double to left to give Methodist an 11 run lead
 after three complete.

The Fighting Squirrels rallied in the fourth with an RBI-single from Sabrina Desper and
two errors from the field but left three runners on base unscored.  Two more hits from
Taylor Barela and Sarah McFarland scored a second run for Mary Baldwin but the
 Monarchs closed the game early.
